Beautiful to look at, ok to use
This microwave replaced a 20yo GE profile drop-down door built-in microwave that threw in the towel. I really, really want to love it. However, there are things that are keeping me from that.
To start off, it looks great. If you want something to be a beautiful microwave in your kitchen, its hard to beat this. Using it, however is where the problem begins.
This unit is mounted so that the controls are probably 4" above my eyes so I'm looking up at it. Since the control panel is etched metal with no back-light, I find it incredibly hard to read. I just know where the buttons are that I use all the time, but I have to get all squinty looking for what I want with others. Sometimes what helps me find the buttons that I use frequently are the smudge marks that are almost impossible to remove.
The only special function that I've gotten the hang of is the popcorn one. The melt one isn't melting how I expect and the defrost doesn't seem to be defrosting how I expect.
Good stuff:
I use my microwave to sometimes store stuff when its not microwaving. Or perhaps cool oven stuff down away from a roving cat. I like it that this unit will turn off its light when the door has been ajar for a few minutes. I've had my other MW actually warm something back up with its light that didn't shut off -- not ideal.
You can see the display quite clearly from across the room.
