Drain Pump Horribly Loud A beautiful nugget ice maker from a well known vendor. Makes awesome nugget ice like nobody's business which everyone in the family and our friends love. Unfortunately, the drain pump installed by Scotsman is horribly loud. We have an open concept house where the kitchen overlooks the family room so kitchen noise is a concern. We had purchased a Bosch dishwasher because you can hardly tell its running which is great. We had planned to install the Scotsman SCN60PA-1SS under the kitchen cabinet until we heard the drain pump activate. The drain pump activates randomly when needed for aprox. 3 seconds, but when it does activate its a very loud "RRREEERRR" sound that startles everyone. So we installed the ice maker in the laundry room (which is off the kitchen) which is an inconvenience and we can still hear the drain pump even with the laundry door closed. I would note that the normal noise made by the ice machine is tolerable for an open concept kitchen, its the drain pump that has the issue. Scotsman would be wise to talk with Bosch and utilize their dishwasher drain pump for this ice maker then they would earn a 5-Star rating every day of the week and twice on Sunday.

Love this ice Bought our SCN60PA from a local shop, but wanted to write a review here because we like AJ Madison. The ice is exactly as expected: "sonic ice", "crunchy ice", "nugget ice", it's the real stuff. The unit looks great. It was fairly easy to install. Of course it produces way more than one family can use. My wife takes a big bag of it to work everyday and neighbors are always stopping by to get their fix. Be aware of two things: 1) The machine does make two distinct noises. One noise is that constant humming as it is producing ice, which is louder than our 55 dB dishwasher. The other noise is during the pump cycle. The ice bin is not refrigerated and so there is constant melting. This is good, because the ice never gets stale. But, because of the melting you have to have a drain, or in my case a pump. The pump is very loud (okay, not like a jet engine, but for a kitchen it is loud. It is definitely the loudest noise in our kitchen, except for if the 600 cfm vent hood is going full blast). It cycles often (many times per hour). Each time it cycles on, it runs for maybe 2 seconds. It is a bit startling. Knowing this now, I may have installed it in the garage. 2) The icemaker requires maintenance. Okay, that shoudn't be a surprise. I'm a do-it-yourselfer and just getting ready to do my first 6-month maintenance. Part of the maintenance is to put de-scaler (a diluted acid) into the icemaker and run it through the system to remove scale. It looks like a lot of work and prompted me to warn future buyers. Read up on it prior to buying this unit, and make sure you are up to the task or can afford to bring in a technician every 6 months.

Best Ice Ever! Weve owned two icemachines before this one and this has been the best one by FAR! The others were the boring cubed ice,this one produces nuggets that EVERYONE loves! Make for great entertaining and I never run out!

Finally Nugget ice at home! This is the first residential nugget ice maker I've been able to locate. I was really worried that the ice would be too wet and end up in a big clump, but Scotsman has really delivered and the ice is PERFECT. Installation was fairly straightforward. Within 5 minutes of connecting the water supply, ice started appearing. The consistency is great... volume is as promised. I am glad to have this unit installed in my pantry as the noise of the ice dropping is a bit loud. I think if I had it installed in a cabinet there would be more sound dampening. Is it expensive? Yes, but for nugget ice lovers, this has to be the choice. I'm thrilled with my ice machine and would definitely buy again.
